Petticoat Punishment in Erotic Literature
Part Four: 'Gynecocracy' Part III
by Peter Farrer
Other parts of Peter Farrer's dissertation on the origins of petticoat punishment literature should have been printed before the Christmas Annual, but the autumn months proved particularly stressful and time consuming. Everything was rushed - however, further parts will appear at two monthly intervals.

The titles of the remaining chapters of Volume One are as follows:

XIII - The Maid and the Slipper
XIV - Beatrice
XV - The Preparatory Ordeal
XVI  - Mademoiselle's Bed
XVII  - The Morning
XVIII  - Under Elise - First Experiences
XIX  - Under Elise - Animals!
XX  - Under Elise - Lent to Maud

These chapters are concerned with punishment, and sexual activity with the females on the premises. It is necessary for Julian to keep getting into trouble so that he can be punished further. I will summarise them briefly:

In XIII  Elise beats Julian on his behind,  and then on his hands with a slipper. She then undresses him.

'When this was done she slipped over my head a long, laced, embroidered, feminine night-dress of Mademoiselle’s which made me feel very immodest. Possessed by this feeling I looked tenderly at the smart winsome maid, and pressed the back of one of her hands to my lips. Surprised for a moment, she said she was pleased to find I could take my punishment properly and be grateful for it'.

As a reward she kisses and fondles him, but then straps him into a broad leather belt, into the sides of which his wrists are  fastened. He is then put to bed, but is overcome by desperate physical needs, which he is powerless to relieve.

After ninety minutes of this, in XIV Beatrice comes into his room.  Elise has permitted her 30 minutes. He begs her to unfasten him: “There’s a closet near, I know”. Beatrice is enormously amused, but agrees to help him on condition that he promises on his honour to give himself to her to be her absolute slave, whatever the consequences, for five years. Julian is obliged to agree, and is untied.

When he returns she makes him take off his night-dress. After examining his body in various ways she makes him lie on his back on the bed with his head over the edge. She then  throws her skirts over him and straddles his head. Elise now returns and gives him a further slapping with the slipper. Elise tells Beatrice that Lord Alfred Ridlington has been dealt with by Mademoiselle, which makes Julian think that he must be a man. Beatrice tells Julian that he is not to act as a model of Apollo for Maud.

In XV Elise takes Julian to Mademoiselle’s bedroom. Elise is then ordered to “put him through the trial and lesson he ought properly to receive before being permitted to sleep with me in my bed”. Elise then manipulates his penis and rubs herself on him, but fails to rouse him, let alone make him ejaculate, which would be punished by being tied naked to the bedpost. Julian then gets into the bed naked, but has to sleep at the bottom of it. “She [Elise] threw the clothes over me, and I lay like a hot water bottle”.

The night passes in XVI with much amorous fondling by Mademoiselle, but no punishment until Elise wakes him with her slipper.
XVII is again a mixture of sex and punishment. They make love, but as Mademoiselle keeps her night-dress on, it is that which receives Julian’s “spermatozoa”. Julian is distressed by this. He wishes to complete the act:  in fact actually to marry her and beget a child. Mademoiselle  tells him this is impossible, although “Lady Alfred Ridlington will, if you like, lend herself to your whim”. Julian refuses to perform again, so Elise is brought in to birch him into obedience, twice more. The chapter ends: “I felt as though I had potentially lost a child and my spirit was grieved”.

In spite of Mademoiselle’s now apparently tender feelings towards him, she does not revoke the punishment awarded for his rudeness to Elise on the first morning, namely to be “under her” for three days. In XVIII Elise comes and carries off Julian naked to her room. There Julian  is subjected to worse torture than ever. He is suspended and stretched naked between floor and ceiling by means of straps and hooks, then lashed mercilessly with a dog-whip. These verses of John Dryden, which I have not been able to trace, hammered in his head:

Lo! The Queen of pleasing pains,
Linking Loves in mutual chains,
Wreathes the myrtle bowers between
Cottages of living  green;
And commands her virgins gay
Through the mazy groves to stray.

Full three nights in joyous vein
Might you see the choral train,
Hand in hand promiscuous rove
Through thy love-devoted grove;
Crowned with rosy breathing flowers
Under myrtle-woven bowers.

Julian claims that there are many such victims of flagellation:

'If any one burns for more nimble details, let him obtain a verbal account from some victim who, like myself, was forced to the sacrifice as a sheep to the slaughter. There are verily and indeed many such; the case is not rare in England nor in Scotland, less rare in Ireland, and still less rare in Germany and Austria. And it is by no means new. It is mythological and classical; it was known at Pompeii, and practised also at Rome. Such matters are in this country veiled in the closest secrecy. Many a haughty dame, respectable and so to speak irreproachable, could vouch for the truth of the assertion; the walls and closets of many a palace could, if endowed with speech, tell the same tale. In olden days this mystery was not thought necessary. But the world was pagan then. This cult, this luxury, exists only amongst the most highly educated, the most intellectual and most refined; amongst the classes vulgarly described as the “Upper Ten Thousand”. The middle classes and their children are ignorant of this discipline and excess of voluptuousness'.

Elise goes out and the junior maid, Mary, comes in and triumphs over him in his naked state, lifting her skirts to reveal her sex. Elise returns and he is taken down and given breakfast. After which he is compelled to ask pardon for having failed to be aroused by her ministrations the previous evening. Then he is taken to her bedroom and gives her satisfaction orally on his back as with Beatrice. He is now dressed and taken to the school-room after she has painfully drawn back his foreskin, from which he is released by Mademoiselle in front of the girls.

In XIX Elise reclaims him at 12.30 when lessons end. He is taken to the workroom, stripped and placed under a  wickerwork dress stand with his hands tied behind his back. He is tormented by Elise, Mary and the scullerymaid, Susan, and forced to kiss their private parts. Susan  herself has to be compelled to submit to this. A skirt is then thrown over the cage. He is again dressed in his feminine garments for school at 3.30. After this Mademoiselle takes pity on him and lets him rest in her room. But he still has to return to Elise and get into her bed, in which there is sexual activity but no penetration.

Next morning he is required to help her dress: “Her stockings needed the greatest care – their ribs had to be placed with mathematical precision; the stockings themselves drawn to exactly to the right tension, and the suspenders adjusted to the correct length”. This is an early reference to suspenders, which were not yet attached to the corset. “ Suspenders only appeared in the late eighties, but until the end of the century were mounted on a separate band tied round the waist”. [Norah Waugh, Corsets and Crinolines (London: B.T.Batsford, 1954), p.83.  Sarah Levitt, however, in her book, Victorians Unbuttoned: Registered Designs for Clothing, their Makers and Wearers, 1839-1900 (London: George Allen &Unwin, 1986) has pointed out that  stocking suspenders are sometimes attached to the corset in the designs from 1882  (pp.43 and 47}].

In the afternnon he is made to sew in the workroom with frequent punishment for mistakes. In XX Maud comes in: it is Saturday, a half-holiday. Maud wishes  to take possession of Julian for the afternoon, and buys him for £5.

'As soon as we were outside the workroom door she let go my ear and stared coldly at me from head to foot.

“You look just like a girl,” she said in a disappointed tone. “I wonder whether you are one? Follow me to my room anyhow”.

She takes him to her room and commands him to undress, so that she may judge his suitability as a model for Apollo:

"So far as I am concerned you shall always remain masculine. I admire virility. If I punished you it would be for effeminacy. How disgraceful to allow yourself to be treated as you are. How degrading! Mean creature that you must be".

Julian is surprisd to find that he is embarassed by this suggstion.  “The idea of undressing before this elegant girl, alone with her in her room, caused me the greatest perturbation and confusion”. But she insists:

“Undress! I wish you to do so.  Now, we shall both enjoy it. I will help you”.

Affairs had taken a very pleasant turn. It had become a task of love to obey her and the sacrifices involved were sweet and thrilling. We were both in a flutter of pleasant excitement as I yielded to her wishes. She threw the feminine garments one by one from me with disdain. My blushes were materially increased by the loss of my petticoats and the exposure of my bare arms and neck, while my nether limbs were covered by dainty shoes, long stockings and wide, heavily frilled drawers. She laughed gaily at the picture I presented and asked me how I appreciated the ignominy of being condemned to wear a lady's things'
.
There follows a conventional scene of mutual sexual exploration and the eventual seduction of the virginal Maud. She and Julian are caught together first by Elise and then by Mademoiselle, who are horrified at what they find. They are both lashed with a riding whip and  left tied together back to back. This has nothing to do with petticoat punishment, but it provides a pretext for extending it further in the next volume.
