The charming launderette picture shows one of the most interesting things about 'John Bull': that despite the English manliness of its title, it had very advanced ideas regarding petticoat discipline, and the place of the husband in the arcadia of domestic bliss. I reproduce another 'John Bull' cover below. It is a pity that this journal, and its delicately and humourously expressed philosophy of feminine superiority in the home, have vanished from our culture, and at great cost I believe.
Readers can look forward to some more illustrations from this scrapbook in future issues of 'Petticoat Discipline Quarterly'. The 1950s was a decade of very pretty feminine clothing and underwear, and a time when petticoat discipline was still going strong.
The new quarterly met with a very good response. I know it means a longer wait between issues, but that cannot be helped. 'PDM' must have been almost unique amongst amateur sites in the amount of high quality material that it published each month. Two and a half years was long enough at that pace. The quarterlies can be prepared without the exhausting rush and stress that were too often a part of the publication of their illustrious predescessor.
The staff have worked very hard to produce another bumper quarterly issue, and currently the plan is to have a crossword in each edition - but a quick one, not an intellectually demanding cryptic. Christeen has two new pictures, including a baby picture, and we are featuring the first of Mary Beth Sanford's 'dominant mommie' series. But of course the main focus of 'Petticoat Discipline Quarterly' is, and always will be, correspondence - we must never lose sight of that. There are eighteen letters in this issue.
Now, there was something else that I was going to do...what was it? Yes - publish that other 'John Bull' cover:

I may have missed some birthdays...if so, please write again. I am setting up a birthday reference page so that I will have recorded all the birthdays that I receive. If you would like to write to 'Petticoat Discipline Monthly' (which remains the publication's name in our corporate papers) and tell me your birthday, I will make sure that it is on the cover of the appropriate issue.
As always, the staff and I wish you a very happy birthday, and a wonderful new year to all readers.
