No 5 The Devil's Marbles
& The Olgas, Northern Territory
Contributed by Pammie
Judging by the numbers of Devil's
Causeways, Staircases, Coach Houses, Chambers, Bagpipes, Curtains, and
Turrets found in the geological and speleological worlds of all nations,
Lucifer certainly gets around the world a good deal more than the Almighty.
And Pammie has sent me this dramatic and nimbusy picture of the Devil's
Marbles, a remarkable field of giant boulders in Australia's remote
Northern Territory. As soon as I opened this picture, I rushed into the
hallway to get my umbrella: it is a superb sky study.
The Olgas
are a unique mountain range not far from Ayer's Rock in Central Australia.
These fascinating monoliths are named after a German queen, and are rounded
and weathered piles of sedimentary rock, the largest of which has tipped
slightly to one side. The photograph produces almost a surrealist effect,
with its strong blue sky, and mysterious shadows.
It is refreshing to get some pictures from other countries
at last, and more are to follow. Chrissy has promised some African photographs
which should be very dramatic.
