Winner of the Pinafore Competition
Method
I carefully studied all the
contributions to the Christmas Annual, and weighted them partly according
to my own opinion, and partly according to their popularity with readers,
according to the site statistics. I then added to these figures further
scores (worth about half the value) according to people's contributions
during the rest of the year. This, I admit, was an afterthought, but I
think it was fair.
I then wrote out a number
of tickets equal to each person's score, put all the tickets in the canteen
biscuit jar, and jiggled it and rotated it for a few minutes (we don't
run to one of those hypnotically turning, transparent plastic barrels full
of little clinking balls), and then drew the winning name.
The scores which determined
the numbers of tickets for each contributor are a secret. And the winner
was...
