Views of Britain and Ireland
No 3 The Lake, Blenheim Palace
Contributed by Saffron

Blenheim Palace! The stateliest of Britain's stately homes, it is in Oxfordshire, about eight miles from the ancient university town of Oxford. Blenheim Palace is the home of the Dukes of Marlborough, and was the birthplace of Winston Churchill in 1874. It is a palace indeed, and the house itself covers four acres of land, and is set in gloriously landscaped grounds of 2,100 acres.

The lake and waterfall were designed by 'Capability' Brown, and the formal gardens have been likened to those of Versailles. Those readers who have seen Kenneth Brannagh's superb and definitive film of 'Hamlet' (and I cannot recommend it highly enough) will have seen exteriors of this extraordinary pile.

Saffron has photographed the lake through an autumnal mist, providing readers with an exquisitely lovely, and very soothing, photograph.

I have not had too much interest in the 'Country Views' section of 'Petticoat Discipline Monthly' so far. The picture need not be of these islands, it can be of anywhere, and I will change the heading as appropriate. It just needs to be original and charming. I am happy to have been able to publish two magnificent landscapes in the Christmas Annual. As readers have probably guessed from my snapshot of Louth Market, I am myself no photographer.
